[Sounds] Bambu Wukir

March 24th, 2010  |  Published in Post, Sounds

Here are 2 studio tracks of Bambu Wukir, a musician originally from East Java, he now live in Jogjakarta. He performs with a self-made instrument constructed from bamboo that reminds me of the Sasando from Rote, an island part of the East Nusa Tenggara province of the Lesser Sunda Islands. A couple of distinct differences though between Wukir and Sasando music.  Firstly, besides plucking the strings on the circular harp, he also bows the strings.  Secondly, unlike the Sasando which has strings all around the instrument, Wukir’s instrument has strings only half the way, the other half is made up of hollowed bamboo that he strums on like a guitar.  A couple of guitar pick-ups are modified and mounted on to this instrument, the vibrations are then outputted to a distortion pedal and sometimes a pedal that loops his audio.

The second in event of The Future Sounds Of Folk concert series will see Bambu Wukir performing at The UnfiedField space in Jogjakarta on the 04th of April 2010.  For those around, it is something definitely not worth missing!

I would like to thank Wukir for allowing me to post 2 tracks here for your listening pleasure, both the tracks are taken off his latest album Atas Nama Bunyi, there is really nowhere distributing it internationally at the moment, so please email me if you’re interested in this or other Bambu Wukir releases.  The album packaging is also subliminal, its a CD-r release put in a diy sleeve made from… you guessed it – Bamboo.
